  1. Camp near Sardis. Before Brutus's Tent.
  2.  Drum.
  3.  Enter BRUTUS, LUCILIUS, LUCIUS, and the ARMY.
  4.  TITINIUS and PINDARUS meet them.
  5.  
  6. Brutus    Stand, ho!
  7.  
  8. Lucilius    Give the word, ho! - and stand.
  9.  
  10. Brutus    What now, Lucilius? Is Cassius near?
  11.  
  12. Lucilius    He is at hand, and Pindarus is come
  13.     To do you salutation from his master.
  14.  
  15. Brutus    He greets me well. Your master, Pindarus,
  16.     In his own change, or by ill officers,
  17.     Hath given me some worthy cause to wish
  18.     Things done undone; but if he be at hand
  19.     I shall be satisfied.
  20.  
  21. Pindarus                                    I do not doubt
  22.     But that my noble master will appear
  23.     Such as he is, full of regard and honour.
  24.  
  25. Brutus    He is not doubted. A word, Lucilius.
  26.                                          [BRUTUS and LUCILIUS stand apart.
  27.     How he received you let me be resolved.
  28.  
  29. Lucilius    With courtesy and with respect enough;
  30.     But not with such familiar instances,
  31.     Nor with such free and friendly conference,
  32.     As he hath used of old.
  33.  
  34. Brutus                                    Thou hast described
  35.     A hot friend cooling. Ever note, Lucilius,
  36.     When love begins to sicken and decay
  37.     It useth an enforcd ceremony.
  38.     There are no tricks in plain and simple faith;
  39.     But hollow men, like horses hot at hand,
  40.     Make gallant show and promise of their mettle;
  41.     But when they should endure the bloody spur,
  42.     They fall their crests and, like deceitful jades,
  43.     Sink in the trial. Comes his army on?
  44.  
  45. Lucilius    They mean this night in Sardis to be quartered.
  46.     The greater part, the horse in general,
  47.     Are come with Cassius.
  48.                                                     [Low march within.
  49. Brutus                                Hark, he is arrived.
  50.     March gently on to meet him.
  51.  
  52.                       Enter CASSIUS and his POWERS.
  53.  
  54. Cassius    Stand, ho!
  55.  
  56. Brutus    Stand, ho! Speak the word along.
  57.  
  58. 1st Soldier    Stand!
  59.  
  60. 2nd Soldier    Stand!
  61.  
  62. 3rd Soldier    Stand!
  63.  
  64. Cassius    Most noble brother, you have done me wrong.
  65.  
  66. Brutus    Judge me, you gods! - Wrong I mine enemies?
  67.     And if not so, how should I wrong a brother?
  68.  
  69. Cassius    Brutus, this sober form of yours hides wrongs;
  70.     And when you do them-
  71.  
  72. Brutus                                Cassius, be content;
  73.     Speak your griefs softly. I do know you well.
  74.     Before the eyes of both our armies here,
  75.     Which should perceive nothing but love from us,
  76.     Let us not wrangle. Bid them move away;
  77.     Then in my tent, Cassius, enlarge your griefs,
  78.     And I will give you audience.
  79.  
  80. Cassius                                            Pindarus,
  81.     Bid our commanders lead their charges off
  82.     A little from this ground.
  83.  
  84. Brutus    Lucius, do you the like; and let no man
  85.     Come to our tent till we have done our conference.
  86.     Lucilius and Titinius guard our door.
  87.                                      [Exeunt all but BRUTUS and CASSIUS.
